Married At First Sight UK has officially been cancelled by Channel 4 following a major review into the reality show’s duty of care towards its contestants.
The hugely popular dating experiment, which has entertained viewers for almost a decade, will not be returning for another series, bringing an end to one of the channel’s biggest reality TV formats.
The decision was announced on Thursday (November 5), following an external review commissioned after serious allegations of wrongdoing were raised by former participants in a BBC Panorama investigation.
Two women alleged they had been raped during production of the programme, while a third alleged sexual misconduct. The men facing the allegations have denied them.
Channel 4 subsequently launched an external review into the welfare procedures surrounding the show.
Although the review praised the programme’s existing welfare protocols as extensive and thorough, it also made recommendations for further improvements.
Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra said that implementing all the recommendations would fundamentally change the format and editorial proposition of the programme.
She also felt that, after ten years, the show had reached the end of its natural run.
In a further blow for fans, the sixth series of MAFS UK, which had already been filmed, will not be broadcast.
The planned spin-off, Second Married At First Sight, which had been in pre-production before being paused, will also not go ahead.
Instead, Channel 4 has confirmed that the money previously allocated to the show will be reinvested in new programming.
The broadcaster thanked everyone who had worked on the series and acknowledged the millions of viewers who had enjoyed watching the social experiment over the years.
It’s the end of an era for Married At First Sight UK, with fans now left saying goodbye to a reality show that has provided plenty of romance, drama and explosive dinner parties.
