The next PlayStation could come with a seriously expensive price tag, with new estimates raising fears that Sony’s next-generation console could cost gamers hundreds of pounds more than previous generations.
PlayStation fans may want to start saving, as fresh speculation surrounding the PlayStation 6 has raised the possibility of a console costing close to £1,000.
A report published by IBTimes UK on 9 October discussed estimates from hardware leaker Kepler_L2, who suggested the PS6 could potentially launch at between $1,100 and $1,200. That equates to approximately £832–£907 before any differences in regional pricing, taxes or retailer pricing.
However, there is an important catch: Sony has not confirmed the PS6’s price, release date or final specifications. The figures remain estimates rather than an official announcement.
Why could the PS6 be so expensive?
One of the biggest concerns is the rising cost of components needed to manufacture modern gaming hardware.
Memory prices and supply shortages have put pressure on the technology industry, with demand from AI data centres adding to competition for certain components. These increased costs could make it more expensive for manufacturers to produce future consoles.
Sony has acknowledged that memory prices are an important factor in its future hardware planning. In its May 2026 financial briefing, the company said it had not yet decided when its next-generation console would launch or how much it would cost.
That leaves Sony with some difficult decisions. It could look at ways to reduce manufacturing costs, adjust the hardware specifications or consider different sales strategies.
Could the PS6 really cost £1,000?
At this stage, nobody knows.
The figures circulating online are based on industry estimates and speculation, and they should not be mistaken for a confirmed UK retail price. The eventual cost could be higher or lower depending on the final hardware, manufacturing expenses and Sony’s pricing strategy.
There is also no confirmed release date, meaning gamers may have to wait before Sony reveals its plans for the next generation.
For now, PS5 owners shouldn’t assume they’ll need to spend £1,000 on an upgrade. But the discussion highlights a growing concern among gamers: how much will they be expected to pay for the next generation of gaming?
What do PlayStation fans think?
A potential £1,000 console would be a major talking point, particularly for families and gamers who already spend money on games, subscriptions and accessories.
Would players be willing to pay that much for a substantial leap in performance, or would a price like that put them off upgrading altogether?
What do you think? Would you pay £1,000 for a PlayStation 6, or is that simply too expensive for a gaming console?
