With Hollyoaks’ future feeling rocky once more, we’ve got a few ideas to keep things interesting!!
Hollyoaks has given us some unforgettable characters, shocking twists and huge storylines over the years. But with recent news that there’s more shake ups coming, here’s a few things we’d like to see changed.
Here are 10 things we think Hollyoaks needs to change…

1. STOP KILLING OFF SO MANY CHARACTERS
Hollyoaks has never been afraid of a dramatic exit, but sometimes it feels like nobody is safe! We need more characters leaving the village alive, with the door left open for a return.
We’ve said for years and years and years, is that one-minute shock factor worth getting rid of legacy characters?
Even characters like Rex and Jenson who had so much story to tell, killed off before their potential has really been seen.

2. BRING BACK SOME FAMILIAR FACES
There are so many former residents who could walk back into the village and instantly create drama. A few big returns could give longtime viewers a reason to get excited again.
Viewers have gone crazy for returns like Freddie Roscoe, Dodger Savage and James Nightingale – but we’d love to see more back!

3. GIVE THE OSBORNES MORE TO DO
The Osbornes have been at the heart of Hollyoaks for years. They deserve compelling stories that make full use of their history, relationships and complicated family dynamics.
Isabelle Smith helped win Hollyoaks loads of awards and we definitely feel her and the Osbornes are currently very underused.

4. STOP RUSHING BIG STORYLINES
Some major plots need time to breathe. Emotional aftermaths, family breakdowns and relationship troubles should not disappear as soon as the next big twist arrives.
Some characters are killed off and never spoken about again a week later.
Also, a lot of character feel like their storylines aren’t very final, such as Freddie and Clare’s exit.

5. MAKE THE VILLAGE FEEL LIKE A COMMUNITY AGAIN
Hollyoaks works best when different families and characters overlap. More everyday interactions, friendships, feuds and unlikely alliances would help the village feel alive.

6. GIVE THE LEGENDARY CHARACTERS PROPER STORYLINES
Longstanding characters should not just be there in the background. Give them meaningful plots, difficult decisions and moments that remind viewers why they became favourites in the first place.

7. MORE HUMOUR BETWEEN THE DRAMA
Hollyoaks can be dark, but it also needs those funny, chaotic moments that make viewers smile. The balance between comedy and serious drama is important.

8. STOP MAKING EVERY STORYLINE ABOUT A HUGE TWIST
Shocking revelations can be brilliant, but not every plot needs a secret relative, a surprise betrayal or a dramatic cliffhanger. Sometimes the strongest stories are the ones that feel real.
Does an affair reveal really need to end in murder?
Does a great character like Rex really need to be killed off for a one minute shock?

9. LET CHARACTERS FACE THE CONSEQUENCES
When characters do terrible things, viewers want to see the fallout. Relationships should change, friendships should be tested and families should not simply forget everything after a few episodes.
Many twists happen and then it feels like the village has forgotten last weeks drama.

10. GIVE VIEWERS MORE REASONS TO TALK ABOUT THE SOAP
Hollyoaks needs those unmissable moments that get everyone talking the next day. Whether it is a gripping mystery, a brilliant villain, a heartbreaking exit or an unexpected return, the show needs stories that keep fans guessing.
Hollyoaks has a rich history and a passionate fanbase. With the right characters, stronger long-term storytelling and a few surprises, there is plenty of potential for the soap to keep viewers invested.
