British television has given us some legendary soaps over the years, but four remain firmly at the top of the pile: EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

Each has its own loyal audience, iconic characters and unforgettable storylines — but if you had to choose just one, which is actually the best?

EastEnders

Set in the fictional Albert Square, EastEnders has never been afraid to tackle hard-hitting storylines.

From the Mitchells and the Slaters to the Beales and the Watts, the show has created some of Britain’s most recognisable soap characters.

Its biggest strength is arguably its ability to produce dramatic, emotional storylines that get people talking long after an episode has finished.

Coronation Street

There is something uniquely British about Coronation Street.

The cobbles, the Rovers Return and the familiar faces of Weatherfield have been part of British television for generations.

Corrie can do comedy as well as drama, often switching from hilarious moments to devastating storylines within the same week.

Its huge history is also difficult for the other soaps to match.

Emmerdale

If you’re looking for dramatic twists, Emmerdale certainly knows how to deliver them.

Originally centred around village life, the soap has evolved considerably over the years while retaining its rural setting.

It has produced some seriously memorable storylines, with affairs, murders, disasters and family feuds regularly shaking up the village.

Hollyoaks

And then there’s Hollyoaks.

While it may be the youngest of the four, Hollyoaks has developed a style all of its own.

It has traditionally targeted a younger audience and has often been willing to experiment with its storytelling in ways the other soaps don’t.

It has also tackled difficult subjects and social issues, sometimes in particularly bold ways.
