There are few characters in British television history who are as instantly recognisable as Ken Barlow.

For generations of Coronation Street viewers, Ken has been a permanent fixture on the cobbles. He has experienced marriages, affairs, family tragedies, rivalries, deaths and countless other dramas — yet somehow, Ken Barlow remains.

Played by William Roache, Ken made his debut in the very first episode of Coronation Street on 9 December 1960. More than six decades later, Roache’s extraordinary run has made him the longest-serving actor in a continuous television soap role.

From university graduate to Weatherfield legend

When viewers first met Ken, he was very different from the older man they know today.

He was a young, educated character who had graduated from university and had ambitions beyond the working-class environment of Weatherfield.

In fact, Ken was deliberately conceived as something of an outsider.

William Roache later recalled that Coronation Street was originally expected to be a very short-lived production. He has said he was initially persuaded to take the role because the programme was only expected to run for a limited number of weeks.

Clearly, things turned out rather differently.

Ken and Deirdre: one of Corrie’s greatest relationships

One of the defining relationships in Ken’s life was his marriage to Deirdre Barlow, played by Anne Kirkbride.

Their relationship became one of the most recognisable partnerships in soap history — although life between them was rarely straightforward.

Perhaps the most famous chapter came during the 1980s, when Ken became caught up in the infamous love triangle involving Deirdre and Mike Baldwin.

The storyline became one of the most memorable periods in Coronation Street history and helped establish Ken as much more than simply the intellectual resident of No. 1.

Ken has also been married several times over the decades, with his complicated love life becoming a recurring feature of the character.

The Barlow family

Ken’s importance to Coronation Street goes far beyond his own storylines.

He became the head of one of Weatherfield’s most famous families.

His children and grandchildren have continued to play major roles in the soap, meaning that even when Ken isn’t at the centre of a major storyline, the Barlow family remains deeply connected to life on the Street.

His children include Peter Barlow and Tracy Barlow, two characters who have themselves become major parts of Corrie’s history.

That has allowed Ken to remain relevant across multiple generations of characters.

Ken’s 10,000th episode departure

One of the biggest moments in Ken’s later years came during Coronation Street’s historic 10,000th episode in 2020.

Ken made the dramatic decision to leave No. 1 Coronation Street and move away with Claudia Colby to the Still Waters retirement complex.

For a character who had spent virtually his entire life on the cobbles, it was an emotional moment.

But there was an important twist.

Ken wasn’t actually leaving Coronation Street.

ITV confirmed that William Roache was remaining with the programme, with Ken’s new life at Still Waters becoming another chapter in his story.

The story of Ken Barlow is inseparable from the story of William Roache.

Roache was there when Coronation Street began in 1960 and has continued playing the character for more than 60 years.

ITV has described him as holding the Guinness World Record as the longest-running television soap actor.

Perhaps most remarkably, Roache has previously spoken about how he never expected the role to last anywhere near as long as it eventually did.

What began as a job that was expected to last weeks ultimately became a career spanning generations.

Why has Ken lasted so long?

Part of Ken’s longevity comes from the fact that he has continually changed with the programme.

When Coronation Street began, Ken represented a younger generation with ambitions and ideas that sometimes clashed with the traditional world around him.

Over the decades, viewers watched him grow older, become a father and grandfather, experience devastating losses and take on the role of elder statesman within the Barlow family.

He’s therefore effectively grown up alongside the audience.

There is also something uniquely familiar about seeing Ken return to the cobbles.

Characters have come and gone. Families have changed. Businesses have opened and closed.

But Ken remains one of the links between the very first episode and modern-day Weatherfield.

More than 60 years on the cobbles

Coronation Street itself has changed enormously since 1960.

The programme was originally intended to run for just 13 episodes, yet it has gone on to become the world’s longest-running television soap opera. ITV recorded more than 11,600 episodes by September 2025.

And throughout almost all of that history has been Ken Barlow.

For younger viewers, he may simply be the older gentleman who lives in Weatherfield.

For long-term fans, however, Ken represents something much bigger: a living connection to the earliest days of Coronation Street.

Characters such as Ken Barlow are incredibly rare.

Most television characters eventually disappear when their actors leave a programme.

Ken has done the opposite.

He has survived generations of writers, producers, characters and storylines — and William Roache has remained at the centre of it all.

From his early days as a young university graduate to his complicated relationships, family dramas and life as one of Weatherfield’s elder statesmen, Ken has experienced almost everything Coronation Street can throw at a character.
